HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE DAMAGE IS REPAIRABLE?

Evaluate the risk - 

It is important to identify the type of crack or chip that is on your windshield in order to assess the severity of the impact. There are several types of repairable cracks. Here are some examples:

Chips

A CRACKED WINDSHIELD CAN HAVE TWO MAIN CAUSES:

An Impact: This is the most common situation that usually occurs when a rock or road debris hits the windshield.

Stress Cracks: This is a crack without point of impact. The most common causes are temperature changes, pressure changes and structural defects.  This type of crack is difficult to repair because it usually starts at the edge of the windshield and often extends very quickly.

 

In any case, it is important to act quickly. A windshield is designed to be strong. Its concave shape contributes to its resistance to external pressure and aerodynamics. Each cm2 can absorb up to 180 kg / cm2 of pressure. However, a simple crack can considerably weaken its strength, dropping its resistance to 30 kg / cm2.

Repairs are possible for the following reasons:

  • If a crack or a chip does not exceed the circumference of a toonie.

  • If the crack has not extended beyond the exterior glass layer. 

  • If it is not directly in the driver’s line of sight.

  • If the crack is not located in the ceramic strip.

  • If the impact point is located more than 3 cm from the visible windshield border.
